Self-Learning Computer Graphics

I’m currently enrolled in CS114 (which is the project course in Computer Graphics). The professor told the class it would mostly be a self-learning process (a lot of researching). So for the past projects, I’ve spent quite a lot of time on Google (gotta love it) to understand how to code each project. It has been very challenging but also very rewarding.

We learning how to use ray-tracing to render images and how to use it to create shadows and lighting. We also learned how to anti-alias to make images look smoother. The most recent project was to use texture mapping on objects. It was the hardest project I’ve come across in graphics because I had to find how to use images in C++, but it was overall very fun and I love to show my projects to my friends.

Linear Digital Systems midterm

Time for a math-filled midterm. I have not had such a math intensive class since freshmen year. We cover the concepts, but the feel of the class is really math based. Luckily I don’t mind math and as long as I study the definitions I should be fine.

On another note, have you ever heard of the Smith-Waterman algorithm? That is what my research project is about!

Technology

Again, ICS scholars day was an extremely exciting event for the ambassadors!

On my free time browsing through the internet, I came across this article displaying a little bit of technology displayed in France.

ICS Scholar’s Day was great!

Hey Everyone, for those of you that went to ICS Scholar’s Day yesterday: Thank you! We had lots of interesting questions and we hope that we answered most of them. The presentations we had were really interesting. The informatics group had plenty of project classes to show off and our CSE Seniors had some cool headgear for gaming, and maybe in the future, for typing.

Thanks again prospective students and parents. We hope you enjoyed your experience here at the University of California, Irvine. If you have questions feel free to email the ambassadors at icsambassador@gmail.com.

Spring 2010 has begun!

Hello everyone. This quarter I am taking 3 courses: Discrete-time signals, Embedded Systems, and Introduction to computer networks.  I was planning on taking an additional course in distributed software architecture, but I am starting my undergraduate research on GPU’s and parallelism with Professor Xie in his computational biology group. To save myself some stressing over finals week, I will avoid the 21 units and stick with this 18 unit course load. I have gone through my college career without needing to take more than 18 units. I should consider myself lucky then huh?

Olympic Inspiration

Watching the Olympics has never ceased to inspire me. Even though some people sees it as “just ice skating”, but the precision, athleticism, and the determination that support all performances never failed to amaze me. As Olympic athletes, they keep setting new records, striving for both personal best and world best. The pressure, the technicality, the drive…ah it is all so powerful. I am at lost of words each time after witnessing that kind of spirit. The quarter has not been going better, but thanks to these inspirational figures who are doing what they love, I am able to find motivation to pick up the slacks again. I hope that if you are having a hard time this quarter, remember the spirit and determination of these amazing athletes and motivate yourself to reach beyond what you think you are capable of. With the career fair coming up and ICS day planning in action, I am truly excited for you all! Best of luck and keep that spirit up!

Some CAREER PANELS for Bren Students

Hello everyone, as I prepare for a midterm in computer architecture, here are some events you might be interested in, courtesy of the IEEE@UCI club president, Jason Tran.

“On Wednesday, February 24th @ 5PM, at Natural Science Rm. 4201 we will have THREE panelists from the field of computer science. There will be a Test Engineer from Google, Software Quality Engineer from BioRad Laboratories, and CEO from General Web Technologies. I really encourage everyone to go to this panelist event as it has a great bunch of industry reps.

Wednesday, February 24th
Natural Science Room 4201 @ 5PM”

People from Google are coming?! Sounds like an interesting panel we have here. If I have time between studies I plan to go to this panel to hear what interesting inside stories they have for Bren students.

Don’t forget to RSVP on ZotLink! Link for more information: http://www.career.uci.edu/IAmA/Student/Career_Fest.aspx.

Operating Systems

I had my midterm previously with Operating Systems. I really enjoy this class! I am so into Dillencourt’s lectures and the whole class is like puzzle solving! I enjoy reading about it and doing homework. Well anyways, back to the midterm…

My results were… an A! I’m really excited! I wasn’t sure what to expect out of Operating Systems, but it has quickly become one of my favorite computer science courses. I only wish I took it earlier so that I could take the project course in it. The class is getting a little more complex and a little more abstract, but still really interesting none-the-less.

This long weekend is not only Valentine’s Day, but it is also Chinese New Years! What an exciting day I’m blogging on right now. It’s been a really enjoying weekend, but it’s back to studying for Operating Systems.

Senioritis

Hey everyone! I know it has been a really long time since I have posted on this blog and I do apologize! This year it is all about senior design project. It is a lot of fun and of course, time consuming.

It is hard to do anything these days because all I can think about is GRADUATING. I just purchased my cap and gown and in about four months I am walking…it is sooo exciting!

I have a midterm for computer networking on Tuesday but it is Superbowl Sunday! So I guess I wil have to leave the hardcore studying till later :)

Go Saints!

Today’s thought

Junior year is hard. Finally I’ve started to take some upper division computer courses.  As a BIM major, I did not imagine the required CS classes to be as challenging as they prove to be right now. I definitely have to say that as much as I love learning about cs theory, I am not too fond of the programming part itself. You know the times when you see something that makes you cringe? Well, coding does that to me, plus sometimes I even get panic attacks! But all that said, I really enjoy my major. The classes that I am taking are in different fields and gives me a really broad scope of topics and methods to learn. Learning both the business fundamentals along with the mind-challenging CS courses has been a good balance for my courses. It is also through ICS that I have met a lot of really amazing people, and they have completely shattered the stereotypes imposed on most programmers.

Today I watched a video that was mentioned on one of my friend’s blog, and in turn I was linked to another youtube video that I thought was very interesting. It was about masculinity and Disney films. I have always noticed the inequality and views imposed on women by society, yet I never really thought much about how media has impacted people’s views on how a “MAN” should be. Quite frankly, after I watched the video, I was astonished by my blindness towards that up until that very moment. I guess you could say that I had a pretty good wake up call to realizing that what I thought of masculinity was almost exactly identical to how media/Disney films have portrayed it. So, guys! It’s ok to not be the “MAN” that media illustrates. That’s all I have to say :) .

These next two weeks are going to be midterms for many people still.  I wish all of you who still have midterms good luck!! For those who are going through any internship recruitment process, GL to you as well!
